Alexander Pope was born in the City of London on 21 May He was the son of a linen merchant, also Alexander Pope (), and his wife Edith, née Turner (). He was educated privately by family members, priests, and at clandestine Catholic schools. Alexander Pope became a Freemason (a mortal sin in the Catholic Church). He was a member of the Premier Grand Lodge of England, and also belonged to the Spalding Gentlemen's Society. In May, , Pope's Pastorals was published in the sixth part of Tonson's Poetical Miscellanies.
